The main advantages of the C44300 copper alloy U-bend tube stem from its unique combination of excellent corrosion resistance in seawater, good thermal conductivity, and excellent formability. This specific alloy, known as Arsenical Admiralty Brass, is a well-established material for heat exchanger and condenser applications, particularly in marine and power generation environments.

 

1. Superior Corrosion Resistance in Seawater

This is the primary reason for choosing C44300. The alloy is specifically formulated to withstand the harsh conditions of seawater and other aggressive waters.

 

Excellent Seawater Performance: C44300 offers excellent resistance to corrosion in seawater, brackish water, and other contaminated waters . This makes it ideal for marine applications like shipboard coolers and desalination plants .

Resistance to Dezincification: A critical advantage is its resistance to dezincification. This is a form of corrosion where zinc is selectively leached out from brass, leaving behind weak, porous copper. The small addition of Arsenic (As) to the alloy (0.02-0.06%) inhibits this process, ensuring long-term integrity .

Protection Against Biofouling: The copper content of the alloy makes it naturally resistant to microbiological fouling and the attachment of marine organisms like barnacles and algae .

 

2. Optimized Physical and Mechanical Properties

C44300 strikes a well-engineered balance between thermal performance and mechanical strength.

 

Good Thermal Conductivity: With a thermal conductivity of approximately 110 W/m-K at 20°C, it efficiently transfers heat for condensation and cooling processes . While lower than pure copper, it is sufficiently high for most heat exchanger applications .

High Ductility & Excellent Formability: The alloy has excellent cold workability . This is essential for manufacturing U-bend tubes, as it allows the tube to be bent into a tight U-shape without cracking or significant loss of wall thickness. C44300 is known for being easy to fabricate, bend, and form .

Adequate Strength: In its annealed temper (as typically supplied for U-bends), C44300 provides adequate strength for pressure applications. It typically has a minimum tensile strength of 310-365 MPa and a yield strength of ~105-152 MPa . This ensures it can handle the operational stress and pressure inside a shell-and-tube heat exchanger.
